In response to the requirement of national nuclear strategy, the Institute of Radiology Medicine (IRM) of Fudan University was established in 1962. Her legacy name was the Shanghai Institute of Industrial Hygiene. Chen Tongsheng, the president of Shanghai First Medical College, served as the first director concurrently. In 1985, she was renamed as the Institute of Radiation Medicine of Shanghai Medical University, and uses the current name since 2000.

After decades of unremitting efforts of several generations, IRM has developed into a research institution integrating radiation medicine, radiation protection and radiopharmacy, dedicated to the studies of radiation injury and preventation, tumor radiobiology and radiosensitization, radiation protection and quality control of radiodiagnosis and radiotherapy, evaluation of the effects of natural and artificial radiation on health and environment, radionuclide excretion promoting drugs, new radiolabeled and diagnostic drugs, etc. In recent years, it has undertaken a number of the key projects of national key R&D plans and the key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. IRM has achieved fruitful research results and cultivated a large number of high-level professionals for the country.

Adhering to the idea "Giving priority to scientific research and paying equal attention to service", IRM also actively serves the society. She has successfully obtained the Class-A qualification of the technical service for radiation hygiene, the qualification for diagnosis of radiation diseases, and the qualification for occupational health examination of radiation workers. She has carried out the safety and protection evaluation of the construction projects for radiation application, the quality control testing of the equipments for radiodiagnosis and radiotherapy, monitoring of environmental radiation and the personal dose. health examination of radiation workers, and the diagnosis of occupational radiation diseases.

IRM enrolls academic doctoral and postgraduate students majoring in radiation medicine. The main research fields are radiation biology, radiation oncology, radiation protection and dosimetry, radiation pharmacy, radiation toxicology, etc. The employment rate of graduates has been 100%. IRM has actively participated in the work of relevant international organizations and international academic exchanges, and maintaines close scientific cooperation with the institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and other countries. A few of experts in IRM currently serve as the committee member of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the International Committee on Space Research (COSPAR).
